Ports of Hamilton and Halifax forge closer ties to promote short-sea shipping

September 18 , 2009, Halifax, NS - Officials from the Hamilton Port Authority were in Halifax yesterday to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Halifax Port Authority aimed at advancing the development of short-sea shipping service opportunities.

“We recognize that the strategic location of both ports provides a cost effective and efficient gateway for maritime commerce flowing into and out of the Great Lakes Region and the St. Lawrence Seaway,” said Bruce Wood, the Port of Hamilton’s President & CEO. “By promoting short-sea shipping opportunities with Halifax, customers in the heart of North America could access the many connections that the Port of Halifax can provide to markets worldwide.”

As part of the MOU, the two ports will further evaluate the business case for short-sea shipping, identify potential customers and service operators, and plan for marketing of joint opportunities.

“As part of business development for the Port of Halifax, we are exploring the potential for short-sea shipping links with Hamilton in a more formalized way through this agreement signed between our two ports,” said Karen Oldfield, Halifax Port Authority President & CEO.

Direct Container Shipping Service Between Halifax & Vietnam Ports  Begins August 19

August 11, 2009, Halifax, NS - The CKYH Alliance will start direct container shipping service between ports in Vietnam and Halifax on August 19, 2009. Ho Chi Minh City is being added to the current AWE-4 service including direct port calls at Singapore, Shekou, Hong Kong, and Yantian.

The CKYH Alliance members, Cosco Container Lines, "K" Line, Yang Ming and Hanjin Shipping, began calling the Port of Halifax in May 2009 providing connections between Asia and the East Coast of North America. Halifax is the only Canadian port of call on the weekly service.

South East Asia, including Vietnam, is a growth market for the Port of Halifax. Trade is expanding between Halifax and South East Asian countries faster than trade with traditional transatlantic markets. Currently, Asia is the origin for almost half of the containerized cargo handled over the Port of Halifax. The sourcing of apparel production, footwear and furniture by Canadian and U.S. retail importers has encouraged the expansion of container services to Vietnam.

“K” Line operates eight of its 4015-TEU vessels on behalf of the CKYH Alliance for the AWE-4 service. This will be the first direct service between the port of Cai Mep, which serves Ho Chi Minh City, to Norfolk and New York. Transit time is estimated to be 30 days from Ho Chi Minh City to Halifax and 23 days from Halifax to Ho Chi Minh City

Direct service between Vietnam is achieved with the harbor at Cai Mep being dredged to handle deep-sea container vessels. Cai Mep is the first port completed of six planned container terminals.

The port rotation of the revised AWE-4 service will be: Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Shekou, Hong Kong, Yantian, Norfolk, New York, Halifax, and back to Singapore.

New Study Finds $1.5 Billion in Port-related Economic Impact

Halifax, NS – May 12, 2009 - Today, the Halifax Port Authority released the results of a study which researched the economic impact of the Port of Halifax and port-related industries such as trucking and rail. The research findings reveal that the Port, and its diverse areas of business, is a major contributor to the local economy with over $1.5 billion in total impact annually.

The direct and spin-off (indirect and induced) impacts of port-related activities include $1.58 billion in gross output, $671 million in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 11,190 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs. Wages and salaries resulting from port activity were $504.7 million and the average wage for direct and spin-off jobs was $45,100, which is 29% above the provincial average.

The study also looked at rail and trucking impacts, two sectors directly tied to the Port of Halifax. In 2007, CN and related rail service providers contributed $170 million to economic output, with long-haul and local trucking activity contributing $160 million.

The study notes that the cruise business continues to have a major impact on local businesses and the tourism industry. The direct impact in 2008 exceeded $50 million from passenger, crew and cruise line expenditures.

The Port of Halifax also generates positive fiscal impacts to the Province of Nova Scotia and the Halifax Regional Municipality. Annual payments in lieu of taxes to the Halifax Regional Municipality by the Halifax Port Authority exceed $1 million.

The study noted that there are one-time impacts related to renovation and construction projects. With $45 million in capital expenditures expected over the next five years, this equates to 735 person years of employment and $28.5 million in wages and salaries.

Port of Halifax Welcomes Investments in Atlantic Gateway Infrastructure Projects

Halifax, NS - April 30, 2009 - The Port of Halifax welcomes today’s announcement by the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia of investments in key transportation infrastructure projects. Two Port of Halifax cargo projects have been identified as priorities for funding along with supporting projects related to the efficient flow of cargo near the Port.

“On behalf of the Port of Halifax community, I express our thanks to the Federal and Provincial Government, and in particular Minister Peter MacKay and Premier Rodney MacDonald, for the commitment they have made to our Regional transportation network,” said Karen Oldfield, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Halifax Port Authority. “The support of the Province of Nova Scotia and the Government of Canada is important as we move forward competing world-wide for cargo. The direct Port investments, highway projects and Atlantic Gateway business development funding will support the on-going efforts of the Port of Halifax supply chain members.”

The Port of Halifax had provided the Province of Nova Scotia and Government of Canada with a wide-range of infrastructure project options for consideration that covered all areas of the Port’s diverse business. This included rail service, containerized cargo, bulk cargo, breakbulk, roll-on/roll-off and cruise-related projects.

The Port of Halifax infrastructure projects identified in today’s announcement for joint investment in the short-term are:

§ Expansion of the South Container Terminal (operated by Halterm Container Terminal Limited) to increase container handling capacity at the Port of Halifax by extending and deepening Pier C enabling simultaneous berthing of two full-sized post-Panamax vessels. The pier is currently capable of docking one post-Panamax ship and a smaller vessel at the same time, limiting operational flexibility. This project would entail extension of the pier and dredging of the surrounding area from a depth of 14.5m to a new depth of 16.0m. Improved cargo-handling efficiencies, particularly for truck operations through upgrades of the truck marshalling yard, would be created by increasing the terminal area and allowing for a reconfiguration of the approach road and gate complex to improve ingress and egress of truck traffic. Estimated project cost of $35 million.

§ Extension of the Richmond Multipurpose Terminals. This project will upgrade and expand the value-added cargo handling services that can be conducted at Richmond Terminals. The facility would be expanded to enable roll on/roll off handling and enhanced heavy lift capabilities. Area 9D which is currently undeveloped would be upgraded to provide enhanced pier and marshalling capabilities. The activities carried out at Richmond Terminals will be value-added processing, transloading and distribution primarily for export. Estimated project cost of $73 million.

In addition, projects such as the Burnside Connector and Truro High Speed Interchange support the efficient flow of export cargo from our Region to the Port of Halifax and import cargo to Regional businesses. The Business Development and Marketing initiatives to market Atlantic Gateway transportation assets will support the on-going work of service providers throughout the Port of Halifax community.

“Premier MacDonald today described the Port of Halifax as an anchor for our Region. We will continue to work cooperatively with private and public partners to ensure that the Port of Halifax remains a strong anchor for the Atlantic Gateway,” said Ms. Oldfield.
Details on cost-sharing arrangements are to be finalized.

Port of Halifax to welcome 2 millionth cruise passenger in 2009

Halifax, NS – March 11, 2009 - The Port of Halifax will mark a milestone this cruise season when it welcomes over 2 million visitors since the first season back in 1980.

“Tourism operators and the local community can be proud that they have made Halifax, and Atlantic Canada, an appealing destination for cruise passengers that now call here in Spring, Summer and Fall,” said Cathy McGrail, Manager of Cruise Development, Halifax Port Authority. “Between 1980 and 2002, Halifax welcomed 1 million cruise passengers. In just the past 7 years, Halifax has attracted another 1 million passengers. Being able to mark over 2 million passengers this summer is an exciting milestone for Halifax.”

The 2009 season kicks off on May 15th and 124 vessels carrying more than 220,000-230,000 passengers are expected by the time the last ship calls Halifax on November 5th.

Details of the 2009 schedule are available as part of the launch of a new website aimed at improving the visitor experience to the Halifax area. The site (www.cruisehalifax.ca) will allow cruise visitors to plan their visit and give a sense of the experiences Halifax has to offer.

“Cruise has emerged as somewhat of a sleeping giant and is serving to bolster revenues for, not only, the tourism sector but the community at large,” said Patricia Lyall, President and CEO, Destination Halifax. “As a port of call destination, we have the unique and enviable opportunity to make an impression on this captured audience, thus influencing the potential for repeat visit.”

Highlights of the 2009 cruise season include:

Six new vessels and two new cruise lines will call in 2009.

The arrival of the first two vessels, the Maasdam and the Seven Seas Voyager, on May 15th.

The second largest ship ever built by the Cunard Line, the Queen Victoria, will make its inaugural visit to Halifax.

Record single-day in October, when it is expected that Halifax will welcome more than 10,000 cruise passengers in port on one day.

"Cruise lines are demonstrating confidence in our region and in Halifax with their 2009 bookings. We have heard from cruise lines that 2009 will be a challenging year for worldwide travel. Global recessions are impacting consumer demand and we will continue to work with the cruise lines and local tourism industry to maintain and build our cruise business,” said Cathy McGrail.

Oldfield extended as Halifax Port Authority head

Halifax, NS - February 25, 2009 – The Halifax Port Authority’s board of directors today announced the re-appointment of President and Chief Executive Officer Karen Oldfield.

Mark MacDonald, chair of the board of directors, said that the Port of Halifax’s overall profitability and financial strength has grown under Ms. Oldfield’s leadership.  The board extended Ms. Oldfield’s contract following a six month performance evaluation, negotiation and renewal process.  Her new contract will be in place until December 31, 2012.

“Prudent and careful management, supported by sound business decisions made by Ms. Oldfield and her team, have resulted in many benefits for the Port of Halifax, the greater Halifax community and all of Nova Scotia,” said Mr. MacDonald.  “These benefits include better financial returns for the Port of Halifax, greater investments in capital improvements for cargo customers, record high cruise ship traffic at a time of fewer tourists coming to Nova Scotia and becoming the first Canadian port with acredit rating.”

Since Ms. Oldfield joined the Halifax Port Authority:

  • Operating income during the past 5 years totalled $73million, compared to $38 million in the five years previous to her appointment;
  • Capital investments have totalled $100 million, compared to $50 million in the 5 years previous to her appointment;
  • In 2007, Halifax became the first port authority in Canada to receive acredit rating (Rating - A, Outlook - Stablefrom Standard & Poors) This rating was reaffirmed in 2008.

“A profitable, financially strong Port of Halifax allows the management team to continue to work with partners to seek out new opportunities,” said Mr. MacDonald.  “The financial position of the Port of Halifax is a strong reflection of the performance of Karen Oldfield and her team.  It also positions the port well to weather a difficult period with our partners and our customers.”

Audited financial statements for 2008 are currently being finalized and will be distributed prior to the authority’s Annual General Meeting.  In 2008, the Port experienced growth in 3 areas of business (cruise, breakbulk and roll on/roll offcargo) while activity declined in 2 areas (container and bulk cargo).

“The vote of confidence extended to me and the team at the Port by the board of directors is a tribute to the hard work of many people,” said Ms. Oldfield. “The Halifax Port Authority and its partners recognize that much has been accomplished and that a sustained effort is required to retain and attract business in these very challenging times.”

The board of directors also agreed to the request by Ms. Oldfield and the senior management team to defer executive salary increases at this time.

“In the current economic climate, our executive team felt that not accepting any salary increases was the right thing to do,” added Ms. Oldfield.

Karen Oldfield has held the top position at the Port of Halifax since 2002.  She had contributed her leadership skills to a variety of community causes, including the Halifax Gateway Council, Greater Halifax Partnership, QEII Foundation and Saint Mary’s University Board of Governors.
